Somatic Therapy is rooted in the study of neurophysiology, specifically the autonomic nervous system. It works with the fight, flight and immobilization responses that we experience when faced with threat or overwhelming circumstances. This modality safely navigates these responses towards resolution and calm.
Through verbal prompts and supportive touch Somatic Therapy accesses the body’s innate wisdom and impulses to resolve incomplete self-protective responses. This allows for a resolution of past traumas, and the integration of these experiences can bring self-understanding.
Attunement, informed consent and respect for boundaries are the cornerstones of this practice. The terrain of violence, grief and overwhelming experiences requires sensitivity. I empower clients to express their true needs in the therapeutic relationship.
The aim of Somatic Therapy is to bring more embodiment, empowerment and empathy for the self and others. It stimulates regions of the brain that support relatedness. This enhances our core feelings of belonging.
